Sr. PV Design Engineer
Remote Northeast Location
Position Summary:
Client is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Solar PV Design Engineer to lead the technical design of medium to large-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems. The engineer will be responsible for producing high-quality design documentation and system layouts that define the Basis of Design (BoD) for procurement and construction. This role will not serve as the Engineer of Record but will be critical to the technical definition and successful delivery of each project.
The ideal candidate will also have experience in the strategic integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE), and other technologies enabling the design of future microgrid systems for enhanced resilience and grid independence.
Key Responsibilities:
System Design & Engineering
- Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for solar projects.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry standards.
- Stay updated on the latest solar technologies, software, and regulatory changes.
- Support the sales team by providing technical expertise during client presentations
- Familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes.
- Design PV systems including optimal layout configurations, system sizing, and BOS equipment selection.
Microgrid & DER Integration
- Develop strategies to integrate PV with DER assets such as BESS, RICE generators, etc.
- Contribute to control logic, load prioritization, and resiliency planning for microgrid design.
Bid & Documentation Development
- Define the Basis of Design to inform vendor and contractor bid packages.
- Prepare technical bid documentation and review supplier and subcontractor submittals for compliance.
Cost Estimation
- Produce detailed engineered cost estimates for PV and DER systems including labor, materials, and interconnection.
Commissioning Support
- Develop a preliminary commissioning plan during the design phase.
- Support commissioning activities during construction and project close-out, ensuring systems perform to design specifications and meet client expectations.
Utility Interconnection
- Manage utility interconnection applications and coordinate required studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute sales strategies to achieve business objectives
Qualifications
Must Have’s:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience designing solar PV systems (100 kW to multi-MW).
We Value:
- Experience with DERs including BESS, RICE, and hybrid system architectures.
- Knowledge of microgrid configuration, operational modes, and resiliency strategies.
- Familiarity with Forge Solar or similar glare study software.
- NABCEP PV Design Specialist or equivalent industry credential.
- Familiarity with state incentive programs and renewable energy certificates.
- Experience supporting projects across the full lifecycle, from feasibility through commissioning.
Working Conditions:
- Travel required (up to 25%) for field visits and vendor meetings.
- Remote work flexibility available depending on experience and project needs.
